President Donald Trump tweeted Monday morning that Rex Tillerson is no longer secretary of state and that he is replacing him with CIA Director Mike Pompeo.Mike Pompeo, Director of the CIA, will become our new Secretary of State. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the official was not authorized to speak publicly.There had been longstanding rumors throughout most of Tillerson’s tenure of friction between Trump and his secretary of state, a former Exxon Mobile Corp. CEO.In October, NBC news reported that Tillerson called the president a “moron,” something Tillerson never actually denied. Tillerson continued to insist his relationship with the president was solid and brushed off rumors of strain between them.Tillerson had just returned from a shortened trip to Africa hours before Trump’s announcement. Trump offered no explanation for the change.Back in December of 2016, Trump picked Tillerson for the role, but at the time it was considered a controversial pick because at the time Tillerson did not have foreign policy experience, but he did have close ties with many world leaders through his then-role as CEO of ExxonMobil.Tillerson had a shaky confirmation before being after he dodged a series of questions during his hearings, specifically about Russia, and also about human rights violations in other countries.Tillerson has a personal relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin, who awarded Tillerson the country’s highest honor for his work as an oil man.ExxonMobil had a deal with Russia on oil drilling in the Russian arctic which was stopped when the U.S. imposed sanctions on Russia over its actions in Ukraine.A native of Wichita Falls, Texas, Tillerson came to ExxonMobil Corp. as a production engineer straight out of the University of Texas at Austin in 1975 and never left. Groomed for an executive position, Tillerson came up in the rough-and-tumble world of oil production, holding posts in the company’s central United States, Yemen and Russian operations.The president did not say why Tillerson was being replaced.The Associated Press contributed to this story.
